A Brief Biography

I have a deep love of learning and education.  I hope to instill in my students that joy of learning, a desire to be life-long learners, and the positive self-esteem that comes with hard work.  I have a passion for teaching middle schoolers.  I find students this age to be absolutely delightful people with amazing potential.

As for my background and education, I grew up in La Jolla, California, where I graduated from La Jolla High School. I graduated from San Diego State University, receiving my Bachelor's Degree in English, with an emphasis in writing.  I graduated with honors/distinction in the major.  I then went on to earn my teaching credential from San Diego State University.  I also earned my Master's Degree in Education from California State University San Marcos.  My thesis was based on research on mentoring programs.

I am happy to say that I began my formal teaching career here at Marco Forster Middle School in 1998, where I have been ever since.  Marco Forster is a family, and I am happy to be a part of it.  My teaching specialty is seventh-grade English, but I have also taught eighth-grade English, as well as reading and Peer Assistance Leadership.  Other hats I have worn here are facilitator of the 2007-2008 Mentoring for Success Program and a prior coach of the Academic Pentathlon Team.  I also created and implemented The Aloha Spirit program on campus, which allows students to recognize their peers for showing the aloha spirit on campus.  The program promotes and provides a focus on positive behavior, and allows students to be rewarded for kindness and generosity.  I also had the honor of having been accepted to Oprah Winfrey's O Ambassadors program.  O Ambassadors is an exciting joint project of Oprah's Angel Network and Free the Children that inspires young people to become active, compassionate and knowledgeable global citizens.

I am very much a family person.  I am married to the love of my life, Chris, who is also a teacher.  I have two beautiful daughters, Haley and Kaya, who are the absolute joy of my life.  Every day I am blessed to watch them grow and learn about the world around them.  Being a mom is the most important thing that has ever happened to me.  My daughter Haley started fourth grade this year. She loves to read and is a total bookworm, making her English teacher mommy proud!  My daughter Kaya is still in second grade and is blessed with a creative spirit and a blossoming love of reading as well.

I have a deep interest Hawaiian history and culture.  My husband and I were married in a beautiful church on the North Shore of Kauai.  My other interests include traveling, reading, photography, tropical gardening, interior design, and the beach, just to name a few.   I love the outdoors and camping, and have a deep interest in protecting the environment.  I am a huge San Diego Chargers fan!  I am also interested in politics.   Shamefully, I have a vice--reality television--yikes!

I am thrilled to work the students at Marco and look forward to a wonderful year ahead.
